I wish they specified the population of Chatham on its own sign rather than group it all in with the Municipality. It confuses many.

Don't forget the Vera Cruz Restaurant at north entrance to the mall

Chatham Ex-Pat - I can remember those stores as a kid. If I recall correctly the woolco had a restaurant in the far side from entrance (not sure on the name) when Walmart took over they kept the macdonalds in same location until the big over haul Walmart did. The woolco also had a big tiger blanket on the wall nearest mall entrance. The blanket was like one of those old water bed type fury blankets. The pet store I remember had a big fish tank that you could look into from outside the store, remember that is where we bought our fish as kids and also our first family dog. I remember the record store and it might have been a Sam the record man though memory is little foggy. Consumers and leisure world hobby store were at the far end near the grocery store, which might have been an A&P, could be wrong as I was a kid. At this same end of the mall was a computer store and also a small arcade that only lasted a while possibly into late eighties or early nineties. Clothing stores I can't really remember as being a kid the only stores I wanted to hit were woolco toy section, pet store, leisure world, and the arcade...lol. I remember the middle section where things would be setup except the only thing I can recall is some sort of barrel suspended in the air that water was constantly coming out of, sort of a mini attraction. Be nice to see pictures and see if my childhood memories match after all these years. As a kid of the eighties this little mall was in my eyes better than the downtown Chatham centre mall. Now it is a big box plaza and nowhere the charm of the old north maple mall.

Woolco was the anchor at the south end. A Dominion grocery store (later Zehrs) anchored the north. Bank of Montreal was inside near Dominion. In addition to the stores listed above there was also a dry cleaner, a Leisure World hobby shop, Consumers Distributing, Reitmans, a pet store, and a record store.

It was actually a Woolco that was the anchor store. There were many stores in between Woolco and the grocery store which included a Jack Fraser and The Loft, a Belinda and Brother Shoe Store, gift stores, a jewellery store and Town and Country ladies wear store. There was a sunken area in front of the shoe store where a band played when the mall opened.

  • Chatham-Kent Family YMCA, DownTownie (guest) wrote 11 years ago:
Closed. The new YMCA was built in the vacinity of the courthouse on Grand Avenue with promises of all daycare new rooms and equipment. The new facility, although nice, has no daycare facilities. When this location closed, many young families were forced to find daycare elsewhere.

Instead of reviving the down town, looking back now, sadly it destroyed it. Many historical buildings such as Harrison Hall were leveled, streets eliminated, market place destroyed to build this monstrosity. Currently the mall is mostly vacant with the upper florr now turned into rental office space for Union Gas. Sad really.

Its now a big box strip mall. Walmart is in the north end and an Superstore grocery store is there. Also there are a Bank of Montreal, Marks Work Wearhouse, a Dollar store and a couple of other places too. Home Depot and Future Shop are across the street. There is also a Sports bar that only seems to cater to the Wrestling/kickboxing crowd.
